INDONESIAN male tennis player Christopher Rungkat hopes that the new management of the Indonesian Lawn Tennis Association (Pelti) for the 2024-2028 period can be a facilitator for the players.

The athlete, who is familiarly called Christo, hopes that a number of facilities can be provided for tennis players, including the provision of fields for the athletes’ training needs.

“My hope is to be better than before, our future target is to have the SEA Games, Asian Games, SEA Games again because they are held every two years, then the Davis Cup and Fed Cup… They can be a platform and facilitator for Indonesian players,” said Christo as reported by BetweenFriday (2/8).

“I wish there were more fields at GBK than the four or five at Senayan.”

According to Christo, the amount is not enough to hold an international tournament. Especially if the competition is followed by the men’s and women’s sectors.

According to Christo, it takes at least six to 10 courts to hold such a tournament. In addition to the issue of facilities, Christo also spoke about the regeneration of tennis athletes, both male and female.

“If possible, the regeneration is not too far apart after Rifqi, after Aldila, we don’t need to wait long for the new generation,” said the 34-year-old tennis player.

If these two things can be fulfilled, according to Chisto, it is possible that Indonesian tennis players can compete in the world’s multi-sport event, the Olympics.

“Actually it is very possible. Especially in the women’s sector, Aldila is currently ranked 30th, the problem is who will pair up with Aldila,” said Christo.

“There is Janice Tjen, there is Priska who is back after an injury, now there is a possibility with the current material, there is a possibility (of the Olympics). If you look at the world’s 30-odd level, in terms of quality, we have Olympic-quality players.”

The SEA Games hat-trick gold winner in mixed doubles with Aldila Sutjiadi admitted that tennis is indeed a tough sport to qualify for the Olympics. Because, the entry ticket to the Olympics is based on the professional tennis ranking.

This is something that Christo said is difficult for the men’s sector, including Muhammad Rifqi Fitriadi who is currently ranked 824th in the world, with the highest being 530th in the world, and Justin Barki who is currently ranked 760th in the world.

“For PR’s men, yes, the competition for men is indeed tough to enter the top 100, top 200 is tough, but it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Rifqi, Justin Barki, there’s a chance for the next five years,” said Christo.

“A difficult goal but still possible.”

The management of PP Pelti for the 2024-2028 period was officially inaugurated in mid-July. Minister of Youth and Sports Dito Ariotedjo believes that PP Pelti General Chair Nurdin Halid and the newly inaugurated management can elevate Indonesia’s tennis achievements on the world stage.

Chairman Nurdin Halid has a series of short-term and long-term programs that can make Indonesian tennis even better, one of which is the initiative to create a professional tennis league. The Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) Center hopes that the professional tennis league can produce new athletes who excel at the international level. (Z-6)
