On Tuesday evening, the Christmas tree in front of Mirabell Palace in Salzburg was officially lit. The tree comes from the Carinthian Rennweg am Katschberg.
It was the first time for Salzburg’s mayor Bernhard Auinger (SPÖ) that he was allowed to light up the Christmas tree in the city of Salzburg. That’s probably why he described it as “probably the most beautiful tree of the last 30 years”. The tree comes from Carinthia, specifically from the municipality of Rennweg am Katschberg. The celebrations on Tuesday evening were accompanied by alphorn players and the traditional costume band from the Katschtal as well as the children’s choir from the Mirabell primary school.
Rennweg – once part of Salzburg
The mayor Franz Aschbacher from Rennweg am Katschberg came to the enlightenment, as did several community representatives from Rennweg, St. Michael and Salzburg and the Carinthian downhill Olympic champion Fritz Strobl. “The Katschberg is not a border,” emphasized Aschbacher. “It connects Carinthia with Salzburg – and the people. May the tree warm hearts and seal our friendship.” Aschbacher pointed out that Rennweg belonged to the Archdiocese of Salzburg until 1555.
In 2023, the municipality of Dienten donated a 135-year-old spruce tree for the square in front of Mirabell Castle. A year before that – in 2022 – the tree, which weighs around five tons, was felled directly in the state capital, in Schallmoos. In 2021 the tree came from Kuchl, in 2020 from Goldegg.
This year the Christmas tree for the Christmas market on Residenzplatz in Salzburg comes from Ebenau im Flachgau. It’s the anniversary tree, because this year the Salzburg Christmas market is taking place for the 50th time.
