Kerry is bracing itself for a wave of festive cheer (and cold water!) as Christmas swims take place across the county today. Brave souls will be braving the icy Atlantic to raise crucial funds for a variety of local charities. The fun begins at 11:00 am in both Cromane and Waterville, with swimmers taking the plunge to support the diabetes unit at University Hospital Kerry and local charities, respectively. At noon, the action continues in Fenit, where the local RNLI will be the beneficiaries of the chilly dip. In Cuas Crom,swimmers will be braving the cold for the irish Pilgrimage Trust,Kerry Hospice,and Croí Uíbh Ráthaigh. Ballinskelligs and Derrynane will also see swimmers hitting the water at midday, raising funds for Ballinskelligs Inshore Rescue, the Alzheimer society Kerry branch, and their respective inshore rescue services and the Alzheimer Society. At 12:30 pm, Banna beach will be the scene of another festive dip, with proceeds going to the inshore rescue. Over in Ballybunion, swimmers will be taking on the challenge for the Sea and Cliff Rescue, while Inch Beach swimmers will be raising funds for the Kerry Cancer Support Group. Portmagee’s swim, also in support of the Kerry Cancer Support Group, kicks off slightly earlier at 11:30 am.
