Christmas products always expensive

Inflation also affects Christmas products

The end-of-year holiday season is traditionally a time of celebration and feasting. However, this year, consumers face a major challenge: inflation. Despite hopes of a drop in prices, Michel-Edouard Leclerc, emblematic figure of the distribution sector in France, warns once morest premature optimism. Contrary to the reassuring declarations of the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, who proclaimed a victory over inflation at the end of November, he emphasizes that the fight is not yet over.

This situation directly affects the flagship Christmas products. Foie gras, salmon, and poultry, essential to the holiday table, are seeing their prices soar. Leclerc affirms that despite efforts to mitigate the impact on consumers, particularly the poorest, prices will remain stable until Christmas. A situation that requires judicious purchasing planning to avoid overspending.

Hopes for a more lenient start to the year

Fortunately, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. According to the latest data from INSEE, inflation slowed in France in November, falling to 3.4% over one year following a peak at 4.0% in October 2023. This slowdown, due in part to a stabilization of prices in the services, energy, and to a lesser extent food and manufactured products sectors, brings welcome relief.

Michel-Edouard Leclerc himself anticipates a slowdown of the increase in prices in its brands for next year. Increases should not exceed 2.3%. These changes should start to be felt in the wallets of the French from February or March.
