In October 2022, Thorsen turned to anthroposophic medicine, an integrative medical system that seeks to balance and strengthen the immune system with conventional and complementary procedures. With the help of Dr. Yván Villegas, he underwent mistletoe immunological therapy, which acts as an immunomodulator, increasing white blood cells (the treatment must be consulted with doctors, depending on each case). This year, given a significant reduction in the multiple bone and lung metastases that he had, the actor went from intensive therapy to maintenance therapy. He receives mistletoe three times a week subcutaneously, no longer intravenously.

“This is accompanied by hormonal treatment from traditional medicine, in addition to diets that prioritize alkaline foods and restrict sugar, flour, dairy products and alcohol. Christian regained his strength and the pain went away, but it should be noted that he is still in clinical stage 4 and will always be there, although theoretically he is at level zero. The other day he asked me if he was already cured. I told him ‘no’, because cancer is chronic and everything chronic is never cured, it is only controlled,” details the surgeon with a postgraduate degree in Anthroposophical Medicine.

“They evicted me. They gave me between 12 and 36 months to live. And here I am a year and a half later, feeling very good without having had chemotherapy. Last time, my radiologist asked me what I was doing because my lesions on my lungs and bones had disappeared. “He told me there were scars, but nothing more,” Christian highlights with a huge smile.

New life

Since he was diagnosed with cancer, the actor who played Raúl del Prado in “Al Fondo Hay Sitio” lives every minute intensely. He stopped worrying about the future to think only about the present and sharing his experience with other people who suffer from the disease.

“If you don’t change what is essential, what generates the disease, it is unlikely that anything will really change. I don’t regret anything I did, but I think the time has come to reflect on making a couple of changes and seeing life differently. Now I value other things. Instead of regretting, I am grateful. When they told me that I had cancer, I was grateful because I felt that it was a gift to change, not only my life, but also the lives of others,” he says after highlighting that together with Dr. Villegas he seeks for anthroposophic medicine to reach Peruvian universities, and the treatment of mistletoe, to hospitals, through the Minsa.

Back to the ring

After six years away from the acting scene, Christian is preparing to return to acting twice: on the big screen and the theater. In March he will record ‘Sube a mi Nube’, a film about the history of Nubeluz” which will be directed by Soga Producciones. And in August he will participate in the second stage of Preludio’s new venture, “The Little Prince,” playing the pilot.

“I accepted because it seemed like a nice idea to return with tremendous productions. Acting amuses me. I don’t go back to television because I don’t think they want me and I’m not dying to be there either. I was in ‘Mil oficios’, ‘This is Life’ and ‘Al Fondo Hay Sitio’, the most successful productions on Peruvian television. I also did live shows and hosted my own show. I met a lot of people. I went from one side to the other without meaning to. “I lived extraordinary moments, I had a good time,” he details after recalling his beginnings in acting, in “Los de Above y Los De Below,” one of the first Peruvian soap operas with a social theme, directed by Michel Gómez and Eduardo Adrianzén.

“It was the first novel I participated in, and it was so bad that they made my character silent for three weeks. They justified his condition with a blow to the head. During that time, Aristoteles Picho gave me intensive acting classes. They couldn’t take me out because they had announced my entry. They competed with ‘Sparrow’. It was fierce competition. Then they called me to do ‘Nino’. They gave me the main role. I could not believe it. Later I found out that they had called Christian Meier and Diego Bertie, but since they did not accept and the soap opera already had to start, they called me (laughs).” remember.

Christian prefers not to dwell on memories, although he recognizes that he has had a life full of great opportunities and satisfaction, like the one he is currently having. For him, cancer is an opportunity to be grateful, rebuild, give another nuance to his life and why not, also find true love.

“It is a wonderful breath of life. How nice it is to have this option. It is another space of life and a purpose. Mine is to motivate those who suffer from this disease. Now I look at simple things differently. For example, the singing of birds. I had difficult, hard moments of questioning, but I don’t think I ever broke down. It would have been nice to have someone by my side at that moment. But my way of seeing life meant that I wasn’t with anyone. Maybe those are the things that have to change. I don’t regret how I lived, but I would like to have a formal partner. In what remains of my life, I will direct it that way. May we accompany each other in a beautiful way. That excites me. And I didn’t see that before,” she emphasizes.

Laboral life

Christian Thorsen’s television beginnings date back to 1993, when he received the proposal from producer Cristian Andrade to be a model for “Gisela en América”. Tall, blonde, with light eyes, the then physical education teacher quickly connected with the viewer, especially the female one.

A year later she made the leap to directing, in “Without Shame” alongside Maritza Picasso, an explosive but temporary duo, since two weeks after the program premiered, the actress was replaced by Tatiana Astengo.

The performance came into the life of the national artist, in 1994, with “Los de Above y los de Below”. Then he starred in “Nino” and participated in “Everything is bought, everything is sold”, “La rica Vicky”, “Estrellita”, “1000 Oficios”, “This is life” and “At the bottom there is room”. This last production marked the actor’s distancing from fiction on the small screen.

“I didn’t have a very good exit from where I was. And upon leaving the series, I continued with two incredible works: ‘Hamlet’ with director Roberto Ángeles (2016) and ‘Mamma Mía!’ (2017) as Bill Austin replacing Diego Bertie, may he rest in peace. I remember they called me on a Sunday to tell me if I could come in on Wednesday. It was a beautiful experience, with a lot of adrenaline. Then I decided not to act on TV again. I dedicated myself to importing wines without bothering anyone. I went to live in La Molina, where I hardly went out. “I isolated myself,” he says.
