CHRIS WAKELIN believes that his partner’s pregnancy has not only enhanced his potting skills but has also reignited his motivation and fundamentally transformed his journey in the world of snooker.
This Sunday, the talented cueist from Rugby will step onto the grand stage in Nanjing, vying for the prestigious International Championship title and a remarkable top prize of £175,000, which would mark a significant personal milestone as his biggest payday to date.
This has been a monumental year for the 32-year-old former Shoot Out champion, who eagerly anticipates achieving his first Crucible victory at the highest level of competition.
In addition to their impending parenthood, Wakelin and his girlfriend, Lucy, have embraced the milestone of purchasing a new home together, excitedly preparing for “Baby Wakelin’s” arrival in February.
The couple shared a joyful baby-reveal moment in September, puncturing a balloon that released pink confetti, indicating they will welcome a baby girl.
His remarkable performances in China thus far, regardless of the outcome in the final, will contribute significantly to their financial plans for essential baby items like nappies.
Wakelin, who was overwhelmed with emotion after his hard-fought semi-final victory over Xiao Guodong with a narrow score of 9-8, is taking a well-deserved day off before facing the formidable Ding Junhui in a highly competitive best of 19 frames showdown.
He expressed immense gratitude, stating, “I just surround myself with amazingly positive and influential people who always support me and always have my back.”
Wakelin went on to praise Lucy’s impact on his life, “I’m very blessed that Lucy came into my life. She’s incredible. She gives me so much confidence and belief and freedom to concentrate on snooker.”
As he eagerly anticipates the arrival of their first child, he reflected, “It’s the most incredible time of our lives; it’s hard to put into words how things are going right now.”
He added, “It feels like I’m living in a dream world right now.”
When they learned about the pregnancy, his mother raised a concern, saying, “You’ve just bought your first house, you have a baby on the way. Is the pressure not going to be too much?”
Wakelin was quick to respond, asserting, “This is what I need. I need the motivation to push myself to the next level.”
Despite the pressures associated with home ownership and becoming an expectant father, he is determined to harness this as fuel to drive the results he has worked relentlessly for over the past 25 years.
“Hopefully Sunday can be the start of a journey towards being a really top player on this tour,” he proclaimed confidently.
His impressive performances have not only secured him a place in the UK Championship last 32 but also included the feat of eliminating three former world champions along the way.
If he triumphs on Sunday afternoon, he will need to quickly travel to Bolton for a first-round matchup against Ali Carter in the Champion of Champions tournament.
Wakelin humorously noted, “I’d love to say that Nanjing is a beautiful city and I have been able to experience all the sights it has to offer. But I haven’t left the hotel.”
He concluded, “Other than to come to the venue to play snooker. I plan to spend my day off in the hotel room. I need some rest after that semi-final.”
