The grand dame of Austrian television culture has seen a lot. Chris Lohner was an international photo model in the 1960s, started her career as a spokesperson for the ORF (Austrian Radio and Television) in 1973 at the age of 30, has been “the” voice of the Austrian Federal Railways since 1979, wrote 14 books and began her solo career at the age of 63 as a cabaret artist. This year, at the age of 80, she is playing Professor Higgins’ mother in “My Fair Lady” on the Baden stage in October.

On Tuesday on the Nestroybühne in Schwechat, Lohner told of her longing as a child for a grandfather: “In the tram when I was four or five years old I used to scratch the beard of every nice older gentleman and called Grandpa, Grandpa”. The author said with a smile: “You can certainly imagine how embarrassing it was for my mother”.

In her reading “Bazooka and the Four in the Jeep”, the 1943-born woman recalls the tram conductors, the “rubble women” and the reconstruction of the war-ravaged city of Vienna. She talks about bed bugs and ration cards and how her father, who returned from the war in 1946, put on a puppet show for all the children in the apartment building. In two entertaining hours with a short break, the 80-year-old conjured up images from her colorful life in the minds of the audience. The energetic author then signed the books for her fans, which had been prepared by bookseller Elisabeth Strini. To celebrate the prominent visit to the Rothmühle, the “Nestroyans” organized a birthday buffet for Chris Lohner.
