The Republican People’s Party (CHP) won the Turkish municipal elections, which took place on Sunday, following all the ballots were counted, the president of the Turkish Supreme Electoral Council (YSK), Ahmet Yener, announced on Monday.
The main opposition party in Turkey comes first with 37.76% of the vote, followed by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) with 35.48%, the New Prosperity Party (YRP) with 6.19 %, the People’s Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) with 5.70%, the Nationalist Action Party (MHP) with 4.99%, Yener said at a press conference in Ankara. .
The CHP won 35 mayoral positions in large municipalities, compared to 24 for the AKP, followed by the DEM with 10 positions and the MHP with 8 positions, noted the Turkish official.
The president of the Turkish Supreme Electoral Council also indicated that the official participation rate in the municipal elections reached 78.11%.
Turkish voters voted for 1,393 mayors, nearly 20,000 municipal council members and more than 30,000 “mukhtars” in various Turkish neighborhoods and villages, in addition to members of the elderly councils.
