To sum up: it can be said that all speed pedelecs are e-bikes, but not all e-bikes are speed pedelecs. Both modes of transport do indeed have electric assistance, but the power is not the same. A speed pedelec is a bicycle with a power greater than 250 watts, which allows its user to reach speeds of up to 45 km/h when an electric bicycle “only” travels up to 25 km/h. maximum. This therefore implies that speed pedelecs fall into the category of mopeds and must be registered. The user must have a driving license (car or moped) and wear a helmet to take the road. With their greater speed, speed pedelecs allow you to cover more distance, much faster. Do you live on the outskirts of Brussels, 20 km from your job or, quite simply, far from any alternative public transport? The speed pedelec is ideal for journeys of less than 25km, the most frequent distances for commuters. Here, you will only depend on yourself for your daily journeys. But everyone does not necessarily have the physical condition or the time to make these journeys by electric bike, and even less by a “classic” bike. It is therefore in your best interest to favor a speed pedelec because you will arrive faster, earlier, without being exhausted even before starting your day.

A tax advantage for users and employers
While it becomes less and less interesting to continue to choose a company car, especially if it is not 100% electric. Both users and their employers have every interest in promoting the use of electric bicycles. Any company expense (purchase, leasing, development, terminals, equipment, etc.) made to encourage the use of bicycles can benefit from 100% tax deductibility! Thus, nearly one in three Belgian employers (29%) granted a bicycle allowance to employees commuting by bicycle in 2022, compared to only 16% in 2017. Tax-exempt for the worker, this allowance is set at 0.27 euro/km with a maximum of 40km per day.
