Spain has become a benchmark in aesthetic medicine, with a wide range of clinics and highly qualified and trained professionals. Thousands of treatments are performed here every year, of which the non-surgical ones, which are the field of aesthetic medicine, are the most in demand. In fact, according to the study Sizing, the socioeconomic impact of aesthetic medicine in Spain, presented by the Spanish Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SEME), in 2021 nearly 900,000 medical-aesthetic treatments were performed.
How to choose the right aesthetic doctor
For many patients, aesthetic medicine is not just a procedure, but an investment in increasing their self-confidence and emotional well-being. Choosing a doctor you trust to have safe and satisfactory results is crucial. With a solid foundation of knowledge and confidence, patients can embark on a journey toward the wellaging with the certainty of being in expert hands.
To do this, they must consider several aspects, which I have collected in this decalogue:
1. Make sure that the person treating you is a doctor.
Make sure that the person who is going to treat you, and also who is going to diagnose you, is a doctor with training and accreditation in aesthetic medicine, and years of experience to support his work. To check this you can request your membership number. The facilities where he practices must also comply with the regulations for aesthetic medicine centers. This requirement is well specified in section U48 of Health. You can request the clinic’s health permit to verify that everything is in order. They are usually displayed, but if you don’t see it, don’t hesitate to ask to see it.
There are non-medical personnel who sometimes perform aesthetic treatments without the prescription and supervision of a doctor. Don’t put your well-being and beauty in the hands of just anyone.
2. Get reliable references.
It is also advisable to have information from other patients treated by this doctor. This way we can see if its results fit with what we want. That it is recommended by other doctors and health professionals is usually a guarantee of quality. The fact that they have many followers on networks does not accredit their good practice or their experience. It can serve as another reference, but it is not comparable to direct recommendations from people close to you. When we receive friends and family from other patients we have already treated, this guarantees our good work.
3. Personalized approach.
At your appointment, the doctor should offer a personalized approach for you. No one person is the same, we are all unique and need specific treatments for us. The result should respect your beauty in a natural way, without strident changes.
4. The first consultation is key.
A good aesthetic doctor will spend time during a first visit explaining everything you need to know, showing you the evolution of the treatments, clarifying why he recommends a certain technique and not another, and what the immediate following-effect of each treatment will be.
5. Be interested and ask regarding the products they use and make sure they are of high quality.
It is very important to know exactly the materials with which you are going to be injected and how our tissues will react following the application, even months and years later. Require identification labels for each product, because there are many on the market and you have to choose the safest, highest quality and purest ones, such as IBSA hyaluronics, Aliaxin range, Profhilo, Viscoderm… Be aware of their different actions on your fabrics is a right and almost a duty on your part.
6. Not everything is ‘clicking’.
After the first consultation, the doctor may have recommended some treatment with appliances, which is also aesthetic medicine. In these cases, the requirement for information, responsibility and monitoring is the same. It should explain to you what the technique in question consists of, how it will work on your skin, why it is indicated in your case and what effects you will experience in the short, medium and long term. If he does not explain it well, do not agree, because it is very likely that he is applying a treatment that he does not fully master. An important tip: medical-grade appliances usually require few sessions.
7. Avoid ‘trap’ treatments.
That is, one of those ‘professionals’ who pressure you to do many treatments quickly and all in the same day. The typical “I’ll catch you here, I’ll kill you here.” This rush indicates that they are not sure that you will return to the consultation. Medicine should never be a quick business. We do not sell treatments or sessions. We take care of Health, first of all, while preserving Beauty and Well-being.
8. Aesthetic sense, ethics and coherence in relation to the concept of beauty.
In addition to professionalism, it is important that there is coincidence in aesthetic canons. There are treatments that can be very well carried out in terms of asepsis, optimal products and technical execution, but if the aesthetic sense does not coincide with yours, it will not be a good choice. Of course, in medicine there can be no special offers, giveaways, Black Fridays, etc. This price marketing is neither ethical nor acceptable.
9. Demand confidentiality and reviews.
By law, the patient has to be informed of everything that is going to be done and its possible side effects, but they also have to assume their part of responsibility regarding care and medical recommendations following the treatments. You have to sign a consent and demand trust, confidentiality and protection of your data and your medical history. You also have to know that you must contact the doctor in case any problem arises, no matter how minimal, and that he or she must always be attentive to your follow-up and subsequent advice. Your doctor should explain possible side effects and treatments to resolve them. What sets the best doctors apart is that they foresee solutions before the problem arises.
10. Health and beauty go hand in hand in wellness.
It is very important to know that each patient is unique and that to take care of their health, other types of care must be integrated: nutritional guidelines, sun protection, physical exercise, supplements if needed, etc. All of this is what can really help us age more slowly and lead a healthier life.
