Chonbuk National University doctoral student Naeunji (Veterinary Department Epidemiology Laboratory, Advisor Professor Jaegu Eom) won the Best oral presentation award at the International Conference of the World Society for Virology recently held in Latvia. did.

At this international symposium, graduate student Naeunji Na established an animal model for the ‘Akabane virus’ that is transmitted through back mosquitoes, and presented research results related to the pathogenic mechanism of the virus using reverse genetic technology, receiving favorable reviews.

Akabane virus is a virus that is transmitted through back mosquitoes. As the habitat of back mosquitoes expands due to global warming, there is a possibility that the epidemic period and area of the virus will expand. situation.

However, existing research on Akabane virus in Korea has not established an animal model, so there were many difficulties in research on the mechanism that causes pathogenicity, such as the induction of non-suppurative encephalitis in adult cattle.

Through this study, Ph.D. student Eunji Na established an animal model for Akabane virus, which causes miscarriage, stillbirth and encephalitis in domestic voice actors, using a mouse model, and studied related disease-causing factors and pathways.

Doctoral student Eunji Na said, “This study is expected to find factors that cause pathogenicity in voice actors, and to help with the development of vaccines and treatment for Akabane virus in the future through established animal models.” We plan to continue research on treatments such as animal models and vaccine development related to viral infections.”
