The Belgian Cardiological League announced on Wednesday the launch of a campaign to better understand cholesterol, entitled “True/False: 11 misconceptions regarding cholesterol”. A series of words on cholesterol are taken up, analyzed and supplemented in a free information brochure to be found in hospitals as well as on the organization’s website.
Cardiovascular diseases are still one of the main causes of mortality in Belgium, recalls the organization. However, it is one of the risk factors on which those affected can act in order to improve their health, according to the league. The organization stresses the importance of raising public awareness of this problem and is launching a campaign on cardiovascular disease among the general public. “VSLike hypertension, diabetes and other cardiovascular risk factors, cholesterol is a sneaky enemy. It damages the arteries in silence, we do not feel that our arteries are cloggingr”, explains the organization.
It can lead to a heart attack or stroke, the league says. “At that time, cholesterol has already invaded a large number of arteries at all the critical points of our organism (heart, brain, abdominal and thoracic aorta, kidney, etc.).” The organization stresses the importance of having regular check-ups and knowing your cholesterol level.
