Cholera Epidemic in Dominican Republic and Haiti: Updates and Response Plan

In Dominican Republicthe Ministry of Public Health confirmed that the province of Barahona was facing a cholera epidemic. To date, among the 45 patients with diarrhea treated at the Jaime Mota Hospital and the Bahoruco Primary and Outpatient Care Units and The Cienega in Barahona province, 16 were diagnosed with cholera. According to a Public Health press release, 14 of the positive cases were Haitian nationals.

Among the reported cases, significant comorbidities were reported: hypertension, diabetes, hepatitis C, pneumonia, chronic kidney failure and HIV, which explains some prolonged hospitalizations.

The ministry has implemented a response plan that includes active surveillance, health interventions and epidemiological surveillance in affected communities. Vaccination campaigns once morest cholera, the distribution of chlorinated water and the dissemination of preventive recommendations have been deployed. In addition, the National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewerage (INAPA) collaborates in the distribution of safe water for domestic consumption.

In Haiti, as of November 6, 2023, a total of 69,992 (4,080 confirmed) cases of cholera have been reported since September 2022. A total of 65,738 cases have been hospitalized and 1,054 deaths have been recorded. The distribution of cases by province is as follows: West (26,337 cases), Center (14,400 cases), Artibonite (9,941 cases), North (6,276), North West (3,397 cases), North East (2,356 cases), South (2,245 cases), Nippes (2,085 cases), South-East (1,769 cases) and Grande Anse (1,186 cases).
