The WHO has just published new figures on the seventh pandemicpandemic of cholera. According to its epidemiological report, we are witnessing a doubling of the number of cases notified globally in 2022 compared to the previous year (nearly 472,700 cases compared to 223,400). The number of countries reporting cases has also increased: 44 in 2022 (including Lebanon and Syria) compared to 35 in 2021. The World Health Organization (WHO) adds that the epidemic outbreaks have been large, seven countries that have each reported more than 10,000 confirmed cases.

According to the world, variable diagnoses between countries might however distort the numerical results. But in addition to absolute values, “ what is extremely alarming is the trendsaid Philippe Barboza, WHO team leader for cholera and epidemic diarrheal diseases. The absolute number of deaths had fallen for around ten years, before a significant re-increase in 2021. This increase continues and it will be worse in 2023 ».

The role of climate change

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection transmitted by food and water contaminated with materialsmaterials feces which contain the bacteriumbacterium Vibrio cholerae. This disease is therefore closely linked to the absence of drinking water andsanitationsanitationwhich must be ensured in the countries concerned.

Researchers note that climate change plays a role in the cholera outbreak, “ because extreme climatic events such as floodsfloodsTHE droughtsdroughts and the cyclonescyclones cause news epidemicsepidemics and aggravate those that already exist “. In addition, the limited availability of oral cholera vaccine has forced the International Coordination Group – which manages the emergency stock – to temporarily replace the standard two-dose vaccination schedule with a single-dose schedule.
