The South Bohemian town of Chlum u Třeboně has had a difficult night. Firefighters responded to the fire at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which broke out on Monday before 6 p.m. The investigation continues at the scene today. A total of nine units responded to the fire, seven voluntary and two professional. The amount of damage was preliminarily estimated at 15 million crowns, a spokesman for the South Bohemian fire department said yesterday Vratislav Malý.

He informed today that investigators are on the scene and are investigating the cause of the fire. The parish priest also confirmed this for Budějcká Drbna on Tuesday followingnoon Martin Bětuňák for the Parish of Chlum u Třeboň.

According to him, it is still too early to describe the extent of the damage. Currently, only investigators can enter the church. Martin Bětuňák was at a loss for words on Tuesday. “It was a difficult night. But everyone worked together great,” he added.

Not only local residents responded to the fire yesterday. “Very sad. I got married there, baptized both children, and we saw off my parents there on their last journey,” she wrote to facebook groups of the township Jana Prinzová. Other people have added their memories.

The church is a dominant feature of the township and means a lot to the residents. “This also applies to the local firefighters who helped save the church yesterday,” reminded Bětuňák.

“The management of the township of Chlum u Třeboně thanks all the firefighters for today’s response to the fire at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. With their help, it was possible to save the maximum. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are just great. Fortunately, no one was injured. The material damage is enormous. Considering the questions regarding the collection for the restoration of the church, I want to assure those interested that it will definitely be announced. We will proceed in cooperation with the parish,” the mayoress said.

Any assistance will also be dealt with by the councilors of the South Bohemian region, the deputy governor told Budějcké Drbná Pavel Groch (South Bohemia 2012).

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a highly baroque pilgrimage church, which is an important landmark of the town of Chlum u Třeboň in Jindřichohradeck. It was established between 1737 and 1745. Its founder is Baron Jan František from Fünfkirchen. He had it built as a thank you for saving his life when it was buried by masonry on a nearby farm.

Chlum u Třeboně is located near the Austrian border, with approximately 1,900 inhabitants. The Austrian town of Litschau is located approximately five kilometers from the town.
