Veljko Paunovic was the first appointment to the bench made by Fernando Hierro, who arrived at Chivas as sports director at the end of 2022 to put together a project and return the team to the forefront of Liga MX.

In his first tournament in charge of Chivas, Veljko Paunovic concluded the regular phase as third place (10-4-3), advanced directly to the Liguilla and reached the final, in which Tigres took the title from him at home with a somersault included.

The Apertura 2023 treated Veljko Paunovic with Chivas differently, as the team showed a face diametrically opposed to the regularity of months ago and his departure for Almería was even rumored at the beginning of October, however, the Serbian remained in the post.

After 17 dates in the current Mexican football tournament, which is one final series between América and Tigres away from lowering the curtain, Veljko Paunovic registered a total of 19 games, including the quarterfinal series once morest Pumas, with a balance of nine wins, three draws, seven losses and an effectiveness of 47.6 percent.
