Apple Cook revealed in Germany that future chips will mainly come from the Arizona factory. According to Bloomberg, it is the factory of TSMC!
Apple is turning the “long chain” into a “short chain”.
During a recent trip to Europe, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that the chips needed for future devices will mainly be supplied by the factory in Arizona under construction, reducing reliance on chips produced in Asia.
Bloomberg reported that the Arizona factory Cook was referring to is likely to be a fab operated by TSMC. The factory is expected to open in 2024, and TSMC has already set its sights on a second fab in the United States to further expand production of “American-made chips.”
Cook revealed the information at an internal company meeting in Germany during a recent trip to Europe. He also said that Apple will expand the supply of chips to European factories.
Cook told Apple engineers in Germany, “We have decided to buy out the supply of a fab in Arizona that will start production in 2024, which means we are regarding two years away from now, but it may be sooner. “.
“In Europe, I’m sure we’re going to get European supplies,” Cook said.
After Bloomberg News reported Cook’s remarks, TSMC’s ADR continued to rise sharply in the U.S. stock market on Tuesday, closing above 10 percent. Apple shares were largely unchanged.
After the previous U.S. stock market closed, TSMC has already surged due to the massive buying by Berkshire, a subsidiary of the stock god Warren Buffett.
Spokespeople for Apple and TSMC had no comment.
Intel is also building a fab in Arizona at the same time, and the completion date is regarding 2024. Although Intel has served as Apple’s supply chain for many years, according to Bloomberg’s analysis, Intel is unlikely to get Apple’s business once more. Apple Mac and other products have already parted ways with Intel processors and switched to their own design chips, while Intel has not yet achieved actual results in foundry.
The processor is the heart of all Apple products, whether it is Mac Pro, iPhone or AirPod, the chips in them are designed by Apple and manufactured by TSMC. Bringing some percentage of production back to the United States is an important step following years of dependence on Asia.
But an unresolved question will be whether the construction of the Arizona factory meets Apple’s needs.
TSMC previously stated that the Arizona plant will adopt a 5-nanometer process, with an initial monthly production capacity of 20,000 pieces. But can this really meet Apple’s higher-level requirements for 3nm?
In theory, TSMC should be able to introduce higher-level processes. Apple may also use the factory first to meet demand for devices that do not yet require 3nm.
As for Europe, many governments, like the United States, have provided various preferential policies to attract more wafer factories. In the internal meeting, Cook did not mention where the European chip supply will come from, but the media has already disclosed that TSMC has discussed with the German government to establish a German chip factory.
