China’s swimming and diving “dream teams” each have goals for the World Championships
They are all preparing for the Paris Olympics. One is training new recruits and the other is selecting the lineup.
Early this morning Beijing time, the Chinese swimming team flew to Doha. Starting from February 2, the Doha World Swimming Championships will begin. The “Dream Team” Chinese diving team, which competes with all the main players, and the swimming team, which mainly trains newcomers, are looking forward to gaining something from this competition and are preparing for this year’s Paris Olympics.
Among the 13 participants of the Chinese diving team this time, 6 Olympic champions are included. Quan Hongchan, Chen Yuxi, Zhang Jiaqi, Cao Yuan, Wang Zongyuan, Xie Siyu, etc. are all listed. With all the main players participating, the diving team’s goal is not just to compete for gold and silver. This world championship is the last stop for various associations to compete for a spot in the Paris Olympics in diving. Although the Chinese team has fully qualified for the Fukuoka World Championships, it still needs to take this opportunity to observe its opponents, temper its team, and comprehensively consider its results to select its Olympic lineup.
Among the team, Quan Hongchan and Chen Yuxi attracted special attention. Before leaving for the competition, Quan Hongchan was asked how to get herself into the best condition as soon as possible. Quan Hongchan’s answer was “continue to practice.” Chen Yuxi said: “Practice every action to the extreme, which is more attractive to us than getting on the podium.” At the 2023 Fukuoka World Swimming Championships, the Chinese diving team won 12 gold medals. Facing the upcoming World Championships in Doha, the Chinese diving team is looking forward to achieving great results once more.
Since the World Swimming Championships in Doha are only five months away from the Paris Olympics, the Chinese swimming team did not send its entire main force to compete this time. Among the participants, many Olympic and world champions including Wang Shun, Ye Shiwen, Zhang Yufei, Qin Haiyang, and Xu Jiayu will be absent from this competition. Li Bingjie, Pan Zhanle, Yu Yiting, and Tang Qianting appear on the World Championships list, and rising stars Fei Liwei, Zhang Zhanshuo, and Dong Zhihao will also appear in Doha. Although the main force is young athletes, Chinese swimmers will still go all out to compete for gold and silver. At the same time, they will also use competitions as training to accumulate experience for the Paris Olympics.
At the Fukuoka World Championships in July last year, Pan Zhanle swam a time of 47.43 seconds in the men’s 100-meter freestyle, ranking fourth at the World Championships and missing the podium. On the stage of the Doha World Championships, he will challenge for the championship: “I will definitely try my best to achieve good results in this Doha World Championships, but my ultimate goal is the Paris Olympics.”
In addition, 16-year-old Zhang Zhanshuo will usher in his first adult international competition. At the World Youth Championships in September last year, he won the runner-up in the 400-meter medley event in 4 minutes, 12.44 seconds, and set the fastest time in the history of the event among those aged 16 and under.
