The day before yesterday, actress Hu Ling became the first Chinese movie star to walk the red carpet at the Golden Horse Awards festival in Taiwan since 2019, the year in which Beijing announced a boycott of the largest awards ceremony in Taiwan following tensions.

Chinese director Huang Jie also attended the ceremony with her Japanese husband, Ryuji Otsuka. The couple won Best Feature Film for the social drama “Stonewalling,” which they directed together.

“After winning the Golden Horse Awards, we can go to a more wild world and move forward steadily,” Huang told the festival attendees. “I am especially grateful for the Golden Horse Awards.”

The red carpet welcomed actress Hu Ling, nominated for the Best Actress Award for her role in the movie “Carpe Leaping Over Dragons Gate.” She was wearing a bright dress and holding a pineapple in her hand, and was accompanied by Chinese director Yan Xiaolin and some of the film’s actors.

“The (Chinese) name of our film is ‘Pineapple,’ and the Taiwanese audience told me that pineapple means good luck in Taiwanese culture,” Hu said.

However, she lost to 12-year-old Audrey Lyne for “Trouble Girl,” who became the youngest winner of the Best Actress award in the festival’s history.

Taiwanese Hsiao Yachuan won the best director award for the family drama “Old Fox,” while his compatriot Wu Kang Ren won the best actor award for his role as a mute man in the Malaysian film “Abang Adik.”

The award for Best Short Documentary Film was given to “The Memo,” a video diary regarding the pandemic produced by a film couple who were quarantined in a small apartment in Shanghai.

The presence of representatives from the Chinese mainland was a turning point compared to previous years. In 2022, Chinese star Sia Liu, nominated for the Best Actress Award for the crime film “Limbo,” produced in Hong Kong, abstained from attending the ceremony, without giving an explanation.

But last year, Chinese director Huang Shuli personally received the award for best short documentary, in a rare appearance by a filmmaker from mainland China since the crisis.

. The award for best short documentary went to “The Memo,” a video diary regarding the pandemic produced by a film couple.
