(CNN) A special envoy of the Chinese government will visit Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, on the 16th and 17th. Ukrainian government sources said.

China’s foreign ministry announced last week that Li Hui, special representative for Eurasian affairs, would visit Ukraine to “promote peace talks”. According to China’s foreign ministry, Li will visit Ukraine, Poland, France, Germany and Russia.

CNN confirmed that talks will take place on the 16th and 17th.

At a press conference last week, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry said the envoy’s visit to Europe was another example of China’s involvement in promoting talks and that China was firmly on the side of peace. He said it perfectly shows.

The envoy’s visit to Europe was preceded by a phone call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Chinese President Xi Jinping in April. The meeting between Zelensky and Xi was the first since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began last year.

China has repeatedly tried to position itself as a peace broker. But the West has deep suspicions regarding Beijing’s intentions as it deepens ties with Russia.
