An elderly couple in northeastern China have filed for divorce from their daughter-in-law who has been caring for their son in a vegetative state for 15 years. The parents-in-law expressed their position, “Now I want to give her freedom to her daughter-in-law and let her live a new life.”

Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on the 24th that earlier this month, Mr. A and his wife, who live in Jilin Province in northeastern China, filed for divorce, saying, “I want to give my daughter-in-law freedom.”

According to reports, the son of Mr. A and his wife did not wake up for 15 years and spent many years lying in bed in a vegetative state. In the meantime, her daughter-in-law devoted herself to her husband and fought a lonely battle for a long time.

In the complaint, Mr. A said, “My daughter-in-law has devotedly taken care of her son,” and “Now I am filing a divorce lawsuit to give my daughter-in-law a chance for a new life.”

He added, “I hope that my son’s existence will no longer be a burden to my daughter-in-law,” adding, “I will take care of my son from now on.”

Mr. A has a son and a daughter-in-law, and Mr. A said, “I will take care of my granddaughter along with my wife to give freedom to my daughter-in-law.”
