(Beijing = Yonhap News) Correspondent Han Jong-koo = When it became known that the US would provide long-range rocket support to Ukraine, state media representing the position of the Chinese authorities criticized it, saying it would escalate the conflict.

The Global Times, an affiliate of the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, said on the 2nd, “Experts predict that military aid to Ukraine from the United States and some Western countries will provoke a counterattack from Russia and worsen the situation.”

The U.S. and Germany announced that they would provide tanks to Ukraine, and when it became known that the U.S. was considering providing weapons worth 2.2 billion dollars, including long-range rockets, it raised a voice of containment.

In particular, the newspaper mentioned that US President Joe Biden recently answered ‘no’ to a reporter’s question asking whether he was in favor of supporting F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, and said, “If the F-16 fighter jets are delivered to Ukraine, the conflict with Russia will arise.” It’s likely to escalate and get out of control.”

Chinese military expert Song Zhongping told the media, “If Ukraine is armed with fighter jets, it will hit Russia and escalate the conflict. This is why the US and the West are hesitant to provide F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.”

The Global Times’ assertion that Ukrainian arms support will intensify the conflict is in line with Russia’s assertion.

While China has ostensibly declared its neutrality in relation to the war in Ukraine, it has revealed its stance of supporting Russia in reality.

Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a press conference on the 1st that a US military aid package, including long-range rockets, would intensify the conflict but would not change the outcome, Archyde.com reported.
