Chinese authorities have detained the Chinese representative of a foreign consulting firm on charges of spying for the British government. The consulting industry has recently been targeted as the Chinese government tightens its security-related crackdown.

China’s Ministry of State Security said on the 8th that the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) hired the representative from a “third country” to carry out espionage activities.announcementdid. The ministry said on its official WeChat account that the representative, whose surname was Huang, was providing state secrets and information to Britain.

The ministry’s statement did not specify Huang’s nationality or company. The British Embassy in Beijing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Ministry of National Security claims that MI6 contacted Hwang in 2015 and instructed him to travel to China multiple times to gather information. MI6 reportedly requested Hwang as a spy and provided him with the equipment necessary for his activities.

This is the first time the ministry has claimed to have captured a British spy since it began posting on its WeChat account in August last year. He has previously posted details about incidents involving alleged American spies.
