Chinese Electric Cars in Germany: ADAC Test Winners and Losers by Vehicle Class 2023

2024-03-26 00:16:24

More and more Chinese car manufacturers want to sell their electric cars in Germany. But are they good enough to beat the established manufacturers? Partly yes, as the ADAC tests show. Winners and losers at a glance – sorted by vehicle class.

  • Test scores with costs and value for money

  • Image galleries with plus-minus rating

  • Practical links to the individual tests

For the time being, it remains the same: the frontrunners for electric cars in the 2023 registration statistics are Tesla Model Y, VW ID.4/ID.5 and VW ID.3. Škoda Enyaq, Fiat 500e, Audi Q4 e-tron, Tesla Model 3, Cupra Born and Mercedes EQA also feature well in the top 10. In the future, however, the current balance of power might begin to shake. For two reasons: Firstly, because government sales promotion has ceased and more or less all brands are competing with individual price discounts. Secondly, because Chinese car manufacturers are entering the market in large numbers and with ever better electric cars.

The winners of the vehicle classes

The trend is obvious: Chinese-made electric vehicles are now achieving more than respectable ratings in the ADAC test. Nio, for example, achieved very good marks in the ADAC test with its technically high-quality models ET5, ET7 and EL7. MG is currently proven to deliver a good price-performance ratio, but BYD and Smart will sooner or later also be counted among them. The fight for top positions and market shares will continue to intensify, that is certain.

There is a current surprise in the compact class: There the Volvo One more reason to follow the editorial team’s experiences with the Volvo XC40 in long-term testing.

When it comes to small cars, the Fiat 500e is still unbeaten. The best small car is the new Hyundai Kona Electric. In the middle class, the facelifted Škoda Enyaq has managed to take the current top position with the outstanding technology grade of 1.6. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the BMW iX3 remain close behind with a grade of 1.7. With a 1.6, only the BMW iX and the Mercedes EQS score in the technology rating – both very expensive upper-class vehicles. The exorbitantly expensive Lucid Air GT (test car: 175,000 euros) is also largely convincing and gets a grade of 1.8.

Detailed test results

In the tables of all (current) electric cars tested by ADAC so far, you can find the winners and losers in each vehicle class. By clicking on the model name in the table you can access the complete test results in the ADAC database. For a quicker overview, the model-specific strengths and weaknesses are also briefly summarized for you under the photos.

Note: This ranking article is updated regularly. If an electric car cannot be found here, it either has not yet been tested by the ADAC or is currently no longer available for purchase. The list of ADAC car tests is always up to date.
