Chinese auto giant Dongfeng Motor Group is in initial negotiations with the Italian government to produce cars in our country.
Stellantis partner Dongfeng is evaluating a plant in Italy with a capacity to produce more than 100,000 vehicles a year, Qian Xie, head of operations in Europe, said on Tuesday. Italy is trying to lure another carmaker to the country following clashing with Stellantis’ plans seen as penalizing Italy.
«Italy is one of the largest European automotive markets and for a Chinese car manufacturer, having local production means being able to supply all the other countries in the area», declared Xie in Milan on the sidelines of an event for Voyah, the new Dongfeng brand , among the top three automotive manufacturers in China. Voyah is launching its initiatives in Italy, in Milan, during the Design Week and Fuorisalone 2024.
Urso looking for other producers
The Minister of Business and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso has recently said and reiterated that Italy needs more car manufacturers, not just Stellantis therefore, with an opening to the Chinese industry.
“The discussions with the Italian government are at the initial stage: they want to establish a relationship of trust and then deepen it,” Xie said.
