A Chinese medical team deployed to Sierra Leone on Thursday provided training on malaria prevention and treatment to medical staff at the China-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital.
The training provided by the Chinese doctors took the form of a PowerPoint presentation, a video documentary and practical work. It aimed to build the capacity of their counterparts to deal with this epidemic disease.
Zhan Xinjie, the team’s laboratory specialist, gave an overview of what is known regarding the disease, and looked at the different types of parasites that cause malaria in various parts of the world. He then introduced the latest laboratory diagnostic methods to local medical personnel.
“We hope that through this training they can better understand the disease and work together to step up their prevention and treatment efforts,” he said.
For his part, Sallieu Kamara, a doctor at the hospital, thanked the Chinese team for implementing this comprehensive training program for local staff, and said that this new knowledge will help them diagnose the disease more quickly. malaria.
He noted that the hospital faces a chronic lack of equipment that prevents it from carrying out diagnoses effectively, and called on the Chinese side to continue supporting it. “With competent and trained personnel, we can commit to saving more lives,” he said.
