Taiwanese authorities said Thursday they were monitoring Chinese naval training led by the aircraft carrier Shandong which sailed up the Taiwan Strait.
The aircraft carrier entered the strait that separates the island from mainland China on Wednesday followingnoon, “sailing from south to north, following the west side of the median line of the strait,” the Defense Ministry said. from Taipei.
“As of 8:00 a.m. today (01:00 a.m. in Switzerland Thursday), it continued to sail northward through the northern waters” of the island, the ministry said in a statement. The Taiwanese military is monitoring the situation, the statement added.

Taiwan has seen an increase in military and political threats and pressure from Beijing in recent years. China considers that Taiwan constitutes a part of its territory which it will one day seize, by force if necessary.
This latest passage of Shandong comes following China said its troops were “on a permanent high alert level” following the passage of two US and Canadian warships through the strategic waterway last week.
