“China’s Vision for a Gigawatt-level Space Solar Power Station: Future of Energy Generation”

2023-05-24 03:56:19

China plans to build a space solar power plant capable of generating 1 billion watts (1 gigawatt) of electricity. Efforts are being made to realize this dream project under the leadership of the Chinese Society of Astronautics Space Solar Power Commission. The space solar power plant, which is expected to weigh around ten thousand tons, will also have the capability of wireless power transmission.

China’s first satellite, Dongfanghong, weighed only 173 kilograms. But the Chinese space station, which will be completed in 2022, weighs 100 tons. Our space technology is advanced. Li Ming, director of the Chinese Society of Astronautics Space Solar Power Commission, said during the professional forum that the plan is to build a space solar power plant capable of generating 100 million watts (1 GW) of electricity in the future.

This professional forum was also organized as part of the China Space Conference in Hefei, the capital of East China’s Anhui Province. The event was jointly organized by the Chinese Society of Astronautics and the China Space Foundation in conjunction with China Space Day on April 24.

The idea of a solar power plant in space was popularized in 1941 by the works of science writer Isaac Asimov. In 1968, American aerospace engineer Peter Glaser first presented the practical feasibility of a solar power plant in space. A space solar power plant will take decades to become a reality because many technologies need to be developed, including wireless energy transmission.

The United States, Britain, the European Space Agency, Japan and South Korea are also in the race to build a space solar power station with China. Fifty British institutions, including satellite manufacturers SSTL and the University of Cambridge, have joined hands to establish a British space solar power station by 2035.
