China’s Space Station Achievements: Growing Lettuce, Tomatoes, and Onions for Future Missions

ChaiNASA has reportedly grown tomatoes, onions and lettuce on its space station. With this, China also came with the achievement of the United States. Lettuce and cherry tomatoes were first cultivated in China’s space station, Tiangong. It is meant to be used in burgers. Crops also grew. With this, Chinese scientists are very happy with their success. Because before this, only the International Space Station (ISS) operated by the United States was used for such cultivation.

Astronauts from China’s Shenzhou 16 mission planted lettuce and tomatoes on the Tiangong space station. Growing crops is part of China’s future deep space missions. Mission commander Jing Haipeng and astronauts Zhu Yangzhou and Gui Haichao have been at the Tiangong space station since May. They recently returned to Earth.

With the help of two special types of equipment, lettuce and cherry tomatoes were grown on the space station. Four sets of spinach were planted in June. The second crop was started in August. Terry planted tomatoes and green onions in it. There was success in raising all three. Not only this, China’s Space Research and Training Center has created a replica of the space station on Earth and an environment similar to the one there. So experiments can be done in planting plants, crops and fruits. Effects on crops can be studied. Learn the difference between plants in space and plants that grow on land. Growing crops in space is part of a long-term plan.

Yang Renze, a researcher at the China Astronaut Research and Training Center, said the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) is experimenting with growing plants on the space station. Such technologies can be used to grow crops on a large scale in the future.

When human habitation forms on any planet, there will be a need for environmental control and life support systems. Especially on the Moon and Mars. Plants grown using this technology will absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. Astronauts can benefit from this. China is preparing to send two astronauts to the moon before 2030. It is named International Lunar Research Station (ILRS).
