The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on the Chinese population to “take measures to reduce the risk of respiratory diseases” and asked authorities for more information regarding a cluster of pneumonia among children in the north of the country.

The WHO called on China’s population to get vaccinated, stay away from sick people and stay at home if they have symptoms, the UN health agency said in a statement published online on Wednesday.

WHO wants answers from China

At a press conference on November 13, Chinese authorities attributed the increase in respiratory illnesses to the lifting of coronavirus measures and the spread of known pathogens. On November 21, local media and the health authority Promed reported a cluster of undiagnosed pneumonia among children in northern China.

“The WHO has officially asked China for detailed information regarding the increase in respiratory diseases and the reported increase in pneumonia in children,” the UN health agency said on X.

In recent days, media outlets in northwestern cities like Xian have published videos of crowded hospitals where parents and children wait for checkups. Some social media users have posted photos of children doing homework while receiving intravenous infusions in the hospital.
