Beijing: China officially recognized the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. China has recognized the Taliban regime by granting diplomatic status to a representative nominated by the Taliban as Afghanistan’s ambassador in Beijing. China is also the first country to grant diplomatic status to a Taliban representative.
International media reported that Taliban nominee Bilal Karimi has been appointed ambassador to China and that he has submitted his credentials to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As a neighboring country, Afghanistan cannot be isolated from the international community, Chinese Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Wang Wenbin said. Wang Wenbin added that he hopes the Taliban government will build an open and inclusive political structure, adopt moderate and prudent domestic and foreign policies, and resolutely deal with terrorist forces.
China has not maintained close relations with the Taliban regime following widespread criticism of the Taliban’s treatment of women and exclusion of girls from educational institutions.
But China, Pakistan and Russia have maintained embassies in Kabul since the 2021 war ousted US troops from Afghanistan and the Taliban took control of the country. No other country has yet officially recognized the Taliban government, which has committed human rights abuses.
Meanwhile, Pakistan is currently blaming the Taliban government for repeated terrorist attacks in the country. Pakistan also accused the government of not cracking down on the Pakistani Islamic terrorist groups and the Pakistani Taliban operating in Afghanistan.
Following this, Islamabad ordered the forced evacuation of thousands of Afghan refugees who had been living in Pakistan for decades.
