In its efforts to find a political solution to the war, China says it wants to maintain its “impartial” position on Ukraine. According to a statement by the Foreign Ministry, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in a telephone call today.

China will be an “objective and rational voice” in all international multilateral forums and “actively promote peace talks.” The ministry had previously announced that international talks in Saudi Arabia over the weekend on a peaceful solution to the Ukraine war had helped strengthen the international consensus.

More than 40 countries took part in the Jeddah talks, including China, India, the United States and European countries. Russia was not there. Beijing has so far refused to condemn Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022.

The head of the presidential office in Kiev, Andriy Yermak, assessed the talks in Saudi Arabia as a success over Russia. All participants committed themselves to the territorial integrity of Ukraine. In addition, the participants agreed to hold another meeting of political advisors in about six weeks.
