Beijing: China’s former foreign minister Chin Gang was reportedly fired not because of his relationship with a US woman. A foreign media outlet reported that an investigation revealed that Chin was removed from his ministry following it was discovered that he had a relationship with a woman there, with whom he had a child, while he was ambassador to the US.

Meanwhile, Chinese officials have been quoted as saying that an investigation by the Communist Party found Chin Gang to have a lifestyle problem. An investigation is currently underway into whether Chin’s relationship with the US woman affected national security. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to comment on this.

Chin Gang was ousted by the Chinese government in the seventh month following assuming the ministry. Then the former foreign minister Wangi was brought to this position without giving any reason.

But the administration is yet to answer the question of Chin’s whereregardings, who has been ‘missing’ among the Chinese people for a month. China’s official media only reports that ‘Chin Gang was removed and Wang Yi was appointed as foreign minister’. The decision rests with the Standing Committee of the Parliament, the National People’s Congress.

There is also an assessment that the rivalry in the leadership has been hidden following the ouster of Chin Gang, who was known to be a confidant of President Xi Jinping. The habit of saying things openly is also said to be humility.

Chin, who was the ambassador to the US, became the foreign minister last December. The first thing he went to following assuming office was to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Summit held in March this year. It was last released on June 25. His absence from a meeting of diplomatic representatives was officially explained as ‘due to health reasons’. Later, his information also disappeared from the official website.

Chin had tried to improve relations between the US and China, which have been strained over the Taiwan issue. A high-level team led by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken reached Beijing and held talks. Such disappearances are nothing new in China.
