China’s first major liner made its maiden voyage on Monday. This new Chinese technological performance announces a very serious rival for the European shipyards which currently hold the world leadership for liners.
The first liner entirely made in China has made its maiden voyage. After leaving Shanghai, the Adora Magic City, 324 meters long and 70 meters high, set sail for the beautiful volcanic island of Jeju, in the south of Korea.
Designed to attract the Chinese middle class and satisfy their growing appetite for international travel, this 16-deck, 2,125-cabin ship offers 22 restaurants and bars, a mahjong lounge, a brasserie, and several performance halls.
A demonstration of technical capabilities
This liner is presented as the largest mechanical and electronic product in the world. The Adora Magic City, released from the Waigaoqiao shipyards in Shanghai, is a new demonstration of the Chinese capacity to locally produce very large, integrated and very complex sets.
However, many components of the Adora Magic City come from international suppliers. But in the future, “China has the opportunity to build its own supply chain,” said Marco Scopaz, the local project manager for Lloyd’s Register, which provides maritime services.
For the moment, three European shipyards, French, Italian and German, control 90% of this niche market. But following twenty years of growing power, China has established itself as one of the most serious players.
