China is reportedly preparing to ban certain types of clothing and words. According to reports, behavior including dress and speech that is harmful to the Chinese people’s culture and hurts people’s feelings will also be banned.

According to Bloomberg News, China’s Legislative Standing Committee released the draft of the laws, which are expected to be enacted this year, according to reports released by Bloomberg. Violation of the law is punishable by up to 15 days in prison or a fine of up to 5,000 yuan (56,470). However, there is no complete information about what kind of speech and clothes the government will ban.

The draft has been criticized as an example of President Xi Jinping’s crackdown on dissent in China, a country of 1.4 billion people. According to the reports, actions have been taken against the people in the past on account of clothes etc. Last year, a woman was jailed in the city of Suzhou, near Shanghai, for wearing a kimono, a traditional Japanese garment.

Similarly, there have been actions against those who wear rainbow shirts at various events and distribute flags and the like in support of people who are LGBTQ. Similarly, earlier this year, exports of black clothing were banned during Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests.

In any case, there are strong criticisms against such repressions and actions, including on social media.
