Beijing: China has started drilling to build a borehole 34,514 feet deep underground. Drilling is part of the exploration for resources like natural gas and oil that are hidden thousands of feet below the Earth’s surface.
Drilling began in the Sichuan basin in southwest China. It is expected that huge reserves of natural gas can be found here. At the same time, this is the second tube well project that China has initiated in recent times. In May, drilling of a 36,417-foot-deep borehole began in the Tarim River basin in China’s oil-rich region of Xinjiang.
Once its drilling is complete, it will be one of the deepest man-made points on Earth. Government-controlled oil companies are behind the drilling of both borewells.
At the same time, China did not explain the exact reason behind the crackdown in Xinjiang. Drilling began targeting a 145-million-year-old rock-filled tectonic plate underground.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called in 2021 to explore the possibilities of underground exploration. It is estimated that it will help to identify minerals and energy resources and to identify in advance the possibility of natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
At the same time, the deepest man-made point on Earth is the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia. The borehole is only 9 inches in diameter and is 40,230 feet (7.6 miles). Scientists began construction of the Kola Borehole in 1970 on the uninhabited Kola Peninsula, 10 kilometers from Norway, northwest of Russia.
The Koala Borehole is deeper than the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, the deepest part of the world. After nearly 20 years of drilling and testing, drilling of the Kola borehole was stopped in 1992.
As the underground temperature rose to 365 degrees Fahrenheit, all the machines stopped working. With this, the project was terminated without achieving the target of 15,000 meters. This place is sealed and locked today.
