China’s ambitious lunar exploration program continues to push boundaries with the upcoming Chang’e-7 mission, slated for launch in 2026. Targeting the moon’s enigmatic south pole, this groundbreaking mission aims to uncover the presence and distribution of water ice, a crucial resource for future lunar endeavors.
A leap Towards Sustainable Lunar Presence
Previous missions, Chang’e-3, Chang’e-4, Chang’e-5, and Chang’e-6, have successfully landed on various regions of the moon, demonstrating China’s growing prowess in lunar exploration.Though, Chang’e-7 marks a significant milestone by venturing to the lunar south pole, a region shrouded in perpetual darkness and believed to harbor vast reserves of water ice.
“If lunar water ice is successfully located, it could considerably reduce the cost and time required to transport water from Earth, facilitating the establishment of a human base for long-term activities on the moon and enabling further exploration of Mars or deep space,” stated Tang Yuhua, deputy chief designer of the Chang’e-7 mission.

The Chang’e-7 mission presents numerous technological challenges, including extreme temperatures plummeting below minus 100 degrees Celsius and navigating complex, uneven terrain. to overcome these hurdles, the mission employs cutting-edge technologies.
A pioneering feature of Chang’e-7 is the inclusion of a mobile hopper spacecraft equipped with a water molecule analyzer. This innovative lander will “jump” from sunlit areas to shadowed craters, enabling detailed analyses of potential ice deposits. “Chang’e-7 takes a meaningful leap forward by venturing to this extremely challenging terrain. This, coupled with its autonomous capabilities, allows it to analyze its landing terrain and execute operations independently, reducing reliance on ground control.Additionally,our vertical solar panels are designed to capture as much low-angle sunlight as possible,ensuring reliable power even in the challenging lighting conditions of the south pole.”

“Our ultimate goal is to understand the presence, distribution, and potential accessibility of water ice at the lunar south pole.
