China’s announcement to build a permanent human base on the moon

China has announced plans to build a research station at the South Pole of the Moon. China wants to complete this research station called ILRS by 2035.

Basically, this research will serve as a permanent human base that China wants to build with international cooperation.

China’s Sino lunar program chief designer Wu Weiren said during an event that the research center will be built in 2 phases. The construction of the research center will be completed during the missions sent to the moon.

In addition to the Cheng E 7 and 8 missions, 3 international missions will help lay the groundwork for the research center.

Wu Weiren said that the ILRS will be an organized station network that will use the station in orbit as the central hub, while the station at the South Pole will serve as the central base.

He said that this research station will also provide support in exploring the equatorial region of the moon and other places.

He further informed that ILRS will be powered by solar, nuclear and radioisotope generators. The nuclear power plant that Russia wants to build on the moon will also be used for this.

China expects the ILRS to be used to support missions to Mars by 2050.

China released the first roadmap for this human base in 2021 and several countries including Pakistan, Russia, United Arab Emirates and Brazil have expressed interest in joining.

China is also planning to send humans to the moon by the end of this decade.
