Timothy D. Cook has been, since the resignation of Steve Jobs on August 24, 2011, the CEO of Apple Inc.
Tim Cook grew up in Alabama. Her father worked in a shipyard and her mother was a stay-at-home mom. Graduating in 1982 from Auburn University in Alabama in industrial engineering, he brilliantly obtained his MBA in 1988 from Duke University in North Carolina, one of the most prestigious American universities.
Tim Cook worked for 12 years at IBM, notably overseeing production and distribution in North America and Latin America. He then joined Compaq and became vice president in charge of production, supply and inventory management.
It was Steve Jobs who himself poached Tim Cook from Compaq in 1997. Tim Cook joined Apple in March 1998, a year following Steve Jobs’ return to the helm. Reporting directly to Steve Jobs, Tim Cook is responsible for managing Apple’s supply chain, sales, support and customer service for all markets in which the company operates.
Tim Cook then implemented a well-considered strategy: the company must reduce its range of products as well as the number of distributors and resellers. Another strategic shift initiated by Tim Cook: subcontracting in Asia. Tim Cook is the outsourcing man at Apple.
In 2000, Tim Cook took over as head of international sales, then in 2004, he took over as head of the Macintosh division, which is responsible for the MacBook, MacBook Pro and iMac. And there, the results speak for themselves: Mac sales continue to grow. His rise was then meteoric; in 2005 he became deputy general manager of the Apple firm. In January 2007, Cook was promoted to COO.
Tim Cook took interim management of the firm twice, in 2004 (for 2 months) and 2009, while Steve Jobs had to leave for various operations. It was in January 2011 that he took over the helm of the firm, a permanent move from August 2011. Since then, he has led the Apple boat with incredible success and tripled the market value of the brand, which helps to increase his fortune.
Tim Cook is described as a brilliant man and a hard worker. Less impulsive than his predecessor, he can, according to his collaborators, appear emotionally detached and implacable. Although he is a discreet man who makes very few public appearances, several commitments have helped to improve his image: his coming out in 2014, his stated desire to bequeath his fortune to charity following his death…
Tim Cook also serves on the board of directors of Nike.
