(Archyde.com, Geneva, 26th) A letter circulated among United Nations diplomats shows that China is urging countries to boycott the “Hong Kong Media Freedom” event held at the United Nations Office in Geneva. The event was organized by the United Kingdom and four diplomats I confirmed receipt of this letter today.
Archyde.com pointed out that the event called “Media Freedom in Hong Kong” (Media Freedom in Hong Kong) will be held tomorrow on the sidelines of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) meeting, which will hold a five-week meeting.
Jimmy Lai, the son of Hong Kong Next Media founder Jimmy Lai, was one of the speakers at the event. Jimmy Lai completed 1,000 days in prison in Hong Kong today. He was detained on charges of violating the Hong Kong National Security Law and other crimes.
According to reports, a letter widely circulated among diplomats at the United Nations office in Geneva showed that the Chinese delegation asked countries to “not participate in this event in any way.”
Four diplomats confirmed that they had received the letter, and three of them alleged that Chinese diplomats had also contacted some countries individually and requested not to participate in or support the event in any way. The diplomats declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter.
However, a document shows that so far at least 22 countries have co-sponsored the event, including the United States, France and Germany. Central News Agency (translation)
