China unveils a spacesuit designed to walk on the moon

A technician put the space suit, which China aims to begin using on manned moon missions by 2030, to the test, as he showed various movements and gestures, including climbing stairs.

The overall design of the moon landing suit appears inspired by traditional Chinese armor, which emphasizes the strong and resolute appearance of the suit. It also features stripes, which have always been an important element in Chinese spacesuit design.

The new moon suit is a development of “Feitan”, the first locally made Chinese space suit.

“The lunar landing suit is designed for lunar explorations such as walking and working on the lunar surface, so we also want to convey a strong-willed and steadfast feeling, which we have integrated into Organic in the design of the suit.”

After displaying the suit during the opening ceremony of the Third Spacesuit Technology Forum, Yang Liwei, deputy chief designer of China’s manned space program and China’s first astronaut, and the technician, launched a public campaign to name the new lunar spacesuit. This campaign will end on October 31, 2024.

Experts on China’s first lunar spacesuit provided additional details about the design, which included a protective fabric that protects against the harsh thermal environment and moon dust, a panoramic anti-glare visor to improve visibility, two cameras on either side of the helmet for video recording, and a multi-function console on the chest that simplifies operations for greater efficiency. .

In contrast to China’s current Feitian spacesuit, “the new spacesuit is primarily designed to be lightweight, meeting the requirements of activities in a low-gravity environment, with configurations that allow for easy squatting and bending,” CCTV reports.

“Unlike performing low-Earth orbit missions, astronauts will be exposed to a naturally harsh lunar environment when performing extravehicular activities on the lunar surface,” said Wu Zhiqiang, one of the designers of astronaut training systems at the China Astronaut Research and Training Center. Complex environmental factors such as high vacuum, low gravity, dust, lunar soil, complex surface topography, high and low temperatures and strong radiation will have a great impact on the work and protection of astronauts. “Since they work under a gravity of one-sixth that of gravity, in order to reduce the metabolic load of the human body, it is necessary to significantly reduce the weight of the suit.”

He added: “Since astronauts will walk on the surface of the moon and carry out scientific research activities, the spacesuit must have better ergonomic support capabilities, be smaller and more integrated. “The comprehensive protection ability of lunar landing boots should also be greatly improved.”
