China targets dairy products from the EU

China has announced an anti-subsidy investigation into imported dairy products from the EU. According to the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing, various products are affected, such as fresh and processed cheese. The authority set the preliminary investigation period at one year. In 2023, the EU exported dairy products worth 1.7 billion euros to China. Imported pork is also being investigated.

The investigations are likely to be a counter-reaction by China to the punitive tariffs imposed by the EU on Chinese electric cars. As reported, the EU Commission has been investigating unfair subsidies for electric cars in China in recent months and set the rates for the punitive tariffs on Tuesday. The tariffs are not to be imposed until autumn at the earliest and the member states must agree.
