China sends 10 generators to Cuba amid crisis

China sends to Cuba Ten generators will provide 18 megawatts (MW) of electricity in the center of the country, one of the areas most affected by the blackouts, according to the island’s state press.

The delivery of these devices to the provinces of Sancti Spíritus and Cienfuegos takes place in the midst of the energy crisis facing Cuba and will supply electricity to approximately 40,000 homes, according to a report in the official newspaper Granma.

This technology is more robust and guarantees greater reliability in charging,” explained Mario Pedroso, director of the Electric Power Generator and Services Company (Geysel) of the state-owned Unión Eléctrica (UNE).

China, a key political ally of Cuba, has donated components and several complete photovoltaic parks to the Caribbean island in recent months. However, shortfalls due to lack of generation capacity remain high, reaching 1,060 MW at peak demand on Tuesday.

Cuba’s national electricity system is in a precarious state due to the shortage of imported fuel and the constant failures in thermoelectric plants, which are obsolete due to more than four decades of use and the lack of investment and maintenance.

One of the solutions that the Cuban government has implemented to alleviate the situation is the rental of several floating power plants (of which only five currently remain).

Power cuts are hampering the country’s economic performance, which has been mired in a serious crisis for four years.

Anti-government protests, such as those of July 11, 2021 and March 17 in Santiago de Cuba, have been the trigger for recent years.
