China reacts strongly after the Dalai Lama meets with the Foreign Ministry in the US

Tibet’s spiritual leader met the US representatives in New York on Wednesday.

The US meeting with the 89-year-old Dalai Lama was expected to cause irritation among the Chinese authorities, who consider him a dangerous separatist – and they are against representatives of other countries having contact with him.

To the Reuters news agency, Liu Pengyu, spokesperson for China’s embassy in Washington, says that the country is “seriously concerned” about the meeting, and he urges the US not to have contact with the Dalai Lama. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for its part, says it urges all countries not to have contact with the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama came to the United States in June for treatment of his knees, and it is the first time since 2017 that he has visited the country.

From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs met Uzra Zeya, State Secretary for Human Rights and Special Coordinator for Tibet Issues.

She conveyed President Joe Biden’s best wishes for the 89-year-old’s health and “reaffirmed America’s commitment to promoting the human rights of Tibetans and supporting their efforts to preserve their historical, linguistic, cultural and religious heritage,” according to a statement. Kelly Razzouk, the White House’s senior director for human rights, was also present.
