China rallies against serious spike in infections

« Lhe country has reported a total of 253,000 infections since Nov. 1, and many regions are facing a very complicated situation,” Chinese health authorities said.

Faced with this surge, described as “the most serious” since the start of the pandemic in 2020, the authorities have undertaken to strengthen medical resources and implement appropriate measures to contain the new increase.

According to the national epidemic prevention and control office, the average number of daily new cases reached 22,200 this week, nearly double the level of last week.

The pandemic, which has affected many provinces and regions, has shown complex chains of transmission, said bureau official Hu Xiang, noting that some provinces have faced the most severe rise in infections in the past three years.

Experts quoted by the Chinese media, estimated that the new outbreak will have to continue until mid-December next. The situation is likely to worsen during the winter, experts have warned, calling for more efforts to curb the spread of the virus.

Health officials have indicated that medical resources will be strengthened, in particular measures relating to the treatment of patients suffering from serious illnesses in order to reduce the death rate linked to Covid-19.

Officials are concerned regarding hidden transmissions and the rapid transmissibility of Omicron variants, a situation that makes it more difficult to find and track cases at an early stage.

Lack of manpower and resources in high-risk areas like factories, hospitals and schools are also compounding the difficulties of containing the outbreak, according to health authorities.
