China publishes first high-definition geological atlas of the Moon

China on Sunday published a set of geological atlases of the global Moon with a scale of 1:2.5 million, the Xinhua news agency reports.

It is the first complete high-definition lunar geological atlas in the world. Additionally, it provides basic cartographic data for future lunar research and exploration, concludes the Xinhua dispatch dated April 21, 2024 in Beijing.

Antecedent

On June 13, 2022, China announced that on May 30 of that year in Science Bulletin What was a complete geological map of the Moon was published.

On that occasion the Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Scienceswho led the project, reported that the map includes 12,341 impact craters, 81 impact basins, 17 types of rocks and 14 types of structures, providing abundant information regarding the geology of the Moon and its evolution.

He also indicated that this map was expected to make a great contribution to scientific research, exploration and landing site selection on the Moon.

He also said that Chinese scientists from various research institutes and universities developed the high-resolution topographic map based on data from China’s Chang’e lunar exploration project and other data and research findings from international organizations.
