China produced 33% more chips in 2021

To combat the global shortage and aim for self-sufficiency, Beijing is accelerating its massive support for the electronic components industry. In 2021, the country produced nearly 360 billion chips and might become the world’s third-largest vendor by 2024.

China’s production of microchips by domestic companies and foreign factories in the country has grown twice as much as in 2020, according to the Chinese government. China produced 359.4 billion semiconductors in 2021, 33% more than in 2020, figures showed Monday [17 janvier] by the National Bureau of Statistics. A significant acceleration since in 2020 the country had produced 261.3 billion units, or 16.2% more than the previous year.

If the official figures do not give a breakdown by technological node (China is not capable of producing the most advanced semiconductors [dont on mesure la puissance en parlant de nœud]) or by company, they highlight the country’s efforts to boost the production, in full shortage, of chips and to achieve self-sufficiency in semiconductors [essentiels à la fabrication de nombre de produits, des voitures aux consoles de jeu, en passant par les téléphones].

This growth also provides further evidence that Beijing’s efforts to maintain China’s presence in global supply chains are bearing fruit.
