All we were missing was one of the leading experts in Chinese geopolitics, Professor Zheng Yongnian, who discusses on WeChat – the most popular social network in those parts – a China prepared for the scenario of a Third World War. Federico Rampini talks about it in his newsletter, Global. «The essay has a title that couldn’t be more explicit, “The Third World War and its Asian powder keg”», says the Corriere della Sera editorialist in amazement.
But there is more, given that not only did the analysis of the scholar who was much followed by the communist regime go viral on WeChat, achieving enormous consensus. According to what transpires, and which Rampini promptly reports, the article appears to have even been viewed by President Xi Jinping in person. Who knows what his thoughts would have been on the matter, given that Zheng Yongnian places the responsibility for a possible future global conflict on the aggressive imperialism of the United States. What is certain, according to him, is that “in fact a new form of cold war has already begun between the superpowers”. But the most significant data found in the Chinese professor’s analysis is that “the main battleground of the third world war will be the Asia-Pacific area“.
Why? “The reason is simple. This part of the world has all the elements capable of starting a world war. They can be summarized as follows: economic interests + United States + an Asian version of NATO + military modernization + nationalism. In other words, the United States is becoming a significant initiator of war in Asia. The main reason America plans war is the enormous economic benefits it can reap in Asia.” In short, over there they seem to have very clear ideas about the less than rosy future of the planet. Regardless of the certificates of guilt, however, the consideration that China is preparing for a conflict of global caliber does not leave anyone indifferent: the third and, potentially, due to the weapons available, the most destructive.
