China plans to use its lunar exploration program to study the feasibility of applying 3D printing technology to build buildings on the moon, China Daily reported Monday.

According to Wu Weiren, a leading scientist with the National Space Administration of China, the Chang’e-8 probe will conduct field studies of the environment and mineral composition on the Moon and check whether certain cutting-edge technologies such as 3D printing can be used on the lunar surface, according to the daily.

“If we want to stay on the moon for a long time, we have to set up stations using the lunar materials,” Wu said.

Several domestic universities, such as Tongji University and Xi’an Jiaotong University, have already started studying possible applications of 3D printing technology on the moon, according to the daily.

The Chang’e-8 probe, after Chang’e-6 and Chang’e-7, will be the third probe placed on the moon as part of the country’s lunar exploration efforts, the newspaper said.
