Indonesian men’s singles player Jonatan Christie has secured his place in the quarter-finals of the 2024 China Open. Jonatan defeated French representative Toma Junior Popov.

In the last 16 match which took place at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium, Changzhou, Thursday (19/9), Jonatan won after playing three games 16-21, 21-18, 22-20.

The key factor to Jonatan’s victory was in the third game. Before the interval, Toma could not take advantage of the side court advantage because of the wind and instead made several mistakes.

However, Jonatan was made uncomfortable by Toma’s increasing intensity until he finally lost to 9-11.

“After the interval I was still not calm but slowly I was able to regain control of the situation. I lost it a bit when he forced the setting but there was still an opportunity that had not been wasted so I tried to focus again to win the match,” said Jonatan.

“I have to really pay attention to the win-lose conditions of the wind because it will affect the game strategy,” he added.

In the quarterfinals, Jonatan will face the host representative Lei Lan Xi. Jonatan must be alert because the Chinese badminton player was a surprise after eliminating Viktor Axelsen in the round of 32.

At the Hong Kong Open last week, Jonatan also met Lei Lan Xi and suffered defeat.

“Tomorrow against Lei Lan Xi, I will learn from last week’s meeting,” said the badminton player who is familiarly called Jojo.
